The biggest style trends to look out for this festive season https://www.theupcoming.co.uk/2025/11/10/the-biggest-style-trends-to-look-out-for-this-festive-season/ Mon, 10 Nov 2025 08:50:02 +0000 https://www.theupcoming.co.uk/?p=526590 Now you’ve handpicked your perfect Christmas tree, are you ready to refresh your festive look? From medieval-inspired metallics to playful retro hues and rustic Western textures, we spoke to Whinnie Williams, Interior Designer and Trends Forecaster for Balsam Hill, to learn more about some of this season’s biggest style trends.

Merry Medieval

Romance, opulence and candlelight reign supreme this Christmas, as the ‘Merry Medieval’ trend brings the Castlecore aesthetic from TikTok into our living rooms.

“Following the rapid rise of Castlecore, which has captured Gen Z hearts on TikTok with over 280 million views for the hashtag alone, Merry Medieval promises to bring the world of candlelit corridors and velvet-draped banquets to our doors this Christmas,” says Whinnie.

Metallics form the foundation of this look, but forget gaudy golds — this year it’s all about silver and chrome. “Build your tree with a base of silver baubles,” Whinnie recommends. “I opt for primarily shiny chrome as I love the way these reflect candlelight. Further textural dimension comes through the gun-metal-coloured ribbon twisted throughout the tree with velvet and satin finishes on either side. Layer with frosted icicle ornaments and accents of red berries, and finish the look with a metallic tree collar that has the look and feel of amour.”

This trend goes beyond the tree, too. Whinnie suggests extending the medieval glamour to your festive tablescape. “Take a large garland and run it down the centre of the table, dress it with beaded feathers and berries, and stagger pewter candlesticks with tapered candles either side. Dress simple place settings with chrome platters and ornate silverware to add a medieval touch.”

Whether you’re hosting a feast or simply want to evoke a sense of grandeur, this trend transforms your home into something timeless, romantic and deeply atmospheric.

Retromaxxing

On the other end of the spectrum, ‘Retromaxxing’ is the most joyfully nostalgic trend of the season — a riot of colour and charm that captures the heart of 1950s Christmas nostalgia.

“Retromaxxing is where I get to have the most fun,” Whinnie explains. “Rooted in retro charm, this playful look blends 1950s-inspired pastels with a wink of modern kitsch. Think baubles, bows, and ice cream parlour colours like tutti frutti blue and bubblegum pink, all popping beautifully against a classic cherry red.

“By drawing on heirloom treasures, handmade trinkets, and vintage finds, I love that Retromaxxing can be deeply personal and completely unique to every household! It’s both sentimental and delightfully quirky — is there anything more festive?”

Whether you go full candy-coated maximalist or simply add a few nostalgic touches, Retromaxxing reminds us that Christmas decorating should be joyful, playful and entirely your own.

Cowgirl Christmas

While Beyoncé may have brought cowboy couture to fashion runways this year, this trend brings with it an earthy, homespun twist. “I like to think of the ‘Cowgirl Christmas’ trend as yeehaw-meets-hygge,” says Williams. “This trend is all about texture, with a colour palette that leans into earthy browns, sand-washed neutrals, and caramel creams. Oversized jute rosettes add a rustic, farmhouse feel with pinecones adding further natural touches.”

With this trend, the emphasis is on upcycling and individuality. “I’ve added hooks to charity shop horse figurines for a playful touch and threaded ribbon through vintage horsebrasses to create my very own cowgirl-inspired decorations,” Whinnie adds.

As Whinnie puts it, creating a truly personal festive look is about balance. “Choose one unifying element – whether that’s a colour palette, a motif, or even a book or film that inspires you – to tie everything together and give your décor purpose. From there, focus on layering. Don’t be afraid to mix new with old as this is what gives your tree personality.”

Ultimately the most memorable Christmas decor isn’t about perfection – it’s about personality, storytelling, and sparking a little bit of joy.

Experience the magic of Balsam Hill’s luxury artificial trees this Christmas https://www.theupcoming.co.uk/2025/11/05/experience-the-magic-of-balsam-hills-luxury-artificial-trees-this-christmas/ Wed, 05 Nov 2025 10:52:20 +0000 https://www.theupcoming.co.uk/?p=525693 As the festive season draws near, there’s no better time to start planning your home’s Christmas transformation. For those looking to elevate their holiday decor, investing in a luxury artificial tree from Balsam Hill could be the secret to turning your home into a winter wonderland year after year.

Renowned for its meticulous craftsmanship and remarkably lifelike designs, Balsam Hill has become the gold standard in luxury artificial trees. Combining artistry with innovation, each tree captures the spirit of the season in exquisite detail, offering a lasting centrepiece that transcends trends and traditions alike.

With the countdown to Christmas now in full swing, we spoke with Mac Harman, Founder and CEO of Balsam Hill, to discover what makes these trees truly special – and which showstopping designs deserve pride of place in your home this festive season.

Choosing the perfect tree

Reflecting on what drives his designs, Harman, a self-confessed tree enthusiast, explains, “My search for the ultimate lifelike artificial tree was inspired by a family member with a live tree allergy, since then I’ve used site visits and cuttings from real trees as a guide for creating our highly realistic trees.

“When choosing a Balsam Hill tree, the first step is to consider your space before thinking about your style. Do you love the look of a full, traditional tree, or do you prefer something more narrow and modern? Balsam Hill offers a variety of silhouettes so there’s something for every home, but most importantly, pick a tree that brings you joy year after year!”

No matter which tree you choose, Harman insists that fluffing is the secret to achieving that just-cut-from-the-forest look. “When you first set up your Balsam Hill tree, take your time. Start from the bottom and work your way up, separating each branch tip and bending them in different directions from one another.

“Carve out an evening, put some Christmas tunes on and get the whole family involved! It really is worth the time and effort to get the Christmas tree that will be the envy of all your friends.”

Our top picks

Vermont White Spruce Flip Tree

For those seeking both beauty and practicality, the Vermont White Spruce Flip Tree stands out as one of Balsam Hill’s most ingenious creations. Combining the brand’s signature True Needle technology with the patented Flip Tree design, it’s the ultimate blend of form and function.

Unlike traditional artificial trees that require lifting, bending, and endless assembly, the Flip Tree simplifies the entire process. The hinged sections are pre-attached, and the sturdy base is built on a rolling stand that allows you to simply flip the tree upright and secure it in place.

Set-up and take-down can be done in minutes – no heavy lifting, no misplaced branches, and no frustration. It’s perfect for anyone who loves the magic of a full, natural-looking tree but prefers a more hassle-free experience.

Inspired by the lush forests of New England, the Vermont White Spruce itself is one of Balsam Hill’s most realistic designs. Each branch tip features a natural mix of True Needle and classic PVC needles to create depth, fullness, and a beautifully layered silhouette. The result is a tree that looks and feels remarkably lifelike, with a gorgeous fullness at the bottom unlike some other trees on the market.

As Harman notes, “Balsam Hill’s True Needle foliage is designed to mimic real tree needles, and when fluffed properly, it creates an incredibly lifelike, layered effect. It’s this attention to detail that gives our trees that “wow” factor when you walk into the room.”

Whether unlit or pre-lit with colour or clear LED lights, it provides a timeless canvas for your holiday decorations.

Frosted Nordmann Fir Tree

One of Balsam Hill’s newest additions, the Frosted Nordmann Fir effortlessly captures the serene beauty of a snow-covered morning. Native to the mountains south and east of the Black Sea, the Nordmann fir has long been celebrated as one of the most beautiful of all fir varieties, and it’s easy to see why.

Balsam Hill’s interpretation elevates this classic variety with outstanding realism. Each branch is lightly coated to create the effect of freshly fallen snow, giving the tree a soft, natural texture that complements every style of decor – from shimmering silver to warm, rustic woodland tones.

If you’re looking for a tree guaranteed to bring the magic of a white Christmas into your home year after year, the Frosted Nordmann Fir is the perfect choice.

Balsam Fir Tree

The brand’s namesake is iconic for good reason. Revered for its classic silhouette and rich, full foliage, the Balsam Fir showcases the quality and craftsmanship Balsam Hill has become known for.

Modelled after real balsam firs grown on tree farms in Maine, this beautifully proportioned tree features distinct semi-flat needles and gently upturned branches, whilst its elegant teardrop shape and lush greenery evoke the nostalgic charm of a traditional Christmas tree straight from a children’s storybook – making this one of their most popular trees of all time.

Choose from clear LED lights for a classic, gentle glow, or for an even brighter, more sparkling effect, opt for the clear LED fairy lights, featuring over 1,200 micro LEDs throughout the tree’s branches to ensure the room is bathed in shimmering light.

Silverado Slim Tree

Inspired by the natural beauty of California’s Napa Valley, the Silverado Slim brings effortless elegance to even the smallest of spaces. Taking its name from the scenic Silverado Trail, it’s the ideal choice if you want the same full, lifelike look as Balsam Hill’s wider designs, but in a more streamlined, space-saving silhouette.

Available unlit or or pre-lit with clear LED and colour LED options, the Silverado Slim can also be enhanced with Balsam Hill’s innovative Twinkly Light Show technology. Using the Twinkly app, you can customise your display with an array of colours, patterns, and animations, switching from classic white to vibrant festive hues at the touch of a button – making this a showstopper that is sure to impress every guest this festive season.

All in all, investing in a Balsam Hill tree is one of the smartest decisions you can make this Christmas. With lifelike foliage, meticulous craftsmanship, and thoughtfully designed lighting options that truly take the stress out of decorating, each tree is set to become the heart of your home.

As Founder Mac Harman concludes, “While your decorations might change, Balsam Hill’s heirloom-quality trees are designed to last and bring you the same festive joy year after year.”

Redefining sleep and self-care with Silk Works London https://www.theupcoming.co.uk/2025/11/03/redefining-sleep-and-self-care-with-silk-works-london/ Mon, 03 Nov 2025 16:13:38 +0000 https://www.theupcoming.co.uk/?p=523707 When it comes to beauty and wellness, silk has long been celebrated as the ultimate symbol of luxury. But beyond its sumptuous feel, silk offers a wealth of benefits for your skin, hair, and overall wellbeing.

Founded by sisters Laura and Lydia, London-based brand Silk Works was born from a shared passion for beautiful hair, radiant skin, and the power of a simple, timeless secret passed down through generations. Growing up in a Persian household where thick, curly hair was both a blessing and a challenge, the sisters fondly recall their grandmother’s beauty ritual – sleeping on a silk pillowcase. She swore by it as her secret to youthful skin and frizz-free locks, and her wisdom became the inspiration behind their brand.

Combining heritage with innovation, the duo set out to craft a collection of refined silk essentials designed to transform life’s everyday rituals into moments of indulgence. We’ve rounded up the top picks from their newest collection, guaranteed to take your self-care routine to new heights.

Mulberry Silk Pillowcase, from £68

Expertly crafted from the highest grade 6A, 22 momme mulberry silk, Silk Works’ pillowcases are truly redefining the meaning of beauty sleep. Their incredibly smooth surface helps prevent sleep creases while reducing friction that can accelerate fine lines and wrinkles. For hair, the benefits are just as transformative – helping to minimise breakage, tame frizz and keep styles intact overnight.

Unlike cotton, silk doesn’t absorb moisture, allowing your skin and hair retain their natural hydration overnight. Naturally breathable and temperature-regulating, silk supports a more restful night’s sleep – making it as practical as it is luxurious. Available in two sizes and a palette of classic shades, the Mulberry Silk Pillowcase is not only an essential beauty tool but also a timeless addition to any bedroom.

Celeste Silk Pyjama Set, £350

There’s no greater expression of comfort and sophistication than slipping into pure silk. The long-sleeved silk pyjamas are crafted from the softest mulberry silk, offering a beautifully smooth, breathable feel against the skin. Every detail speaks of quiet luxury — from the relaxed yet flattering cut to the subtle piping and practical pockets (a true bonus).

This season, the collection introduces stunning jewel tones including rich mulberry and emerald green, alongside timeless neutrals such as glossy black and classic cream. Whether you’re unwinding after a long day or enjoying a slow morning at home, these pyjamas are the ultimate indulgence in comfort and style. The perfect gift for a loved one if you’re on the lookout for something truly special.

Large Silk Scrunchies, £32

SilkWorks large scrunchies

The set of three Large Silk Scrunchies offer the perfect marriage of style and function. Made with the same high-quality mulberry silk, these scrunchies glide effortlessly over the hair, preventing the pulling, creasing, and breakage often caused by traditional elastics.

Available in a range of stylish colours as well as a skinny version, they’re the perfect upgrade to your haircare routine. Suitable for everything from a sleek ponytail to a relaxed bun, they secure styles without causing stress to delicate strands. For anyone who has struggled with brittle ends or thinning hair, switching to silk scrunchies can be a small but meaningful change with visible results.

Cloud Contouring Sleep Mask, £54

One of the newest additions to the Silk Works London collection, their Cloud Contouring Sleep Mask has been meticulously designed for those who take their beauty sleep seriously. Crafted from 22 momme, grade 6A mulberry silk and finished with cloud-like polyester padding, the mask offers an ultra-luxurious touch that cushions the skin while effortlessly blocking out light for deep, uninterrupted rest. Its contoured, lash-safe design ensures comfort without pressure, making it as gentle as it is effective. Presented in a signature gift box, the Cloud Contouring Sleep Mask makes a thoughtful present for any occasion or an indulgence to elevate your own nightly ritual.

Discover the benefits of laser hair removal with Thérapie Clinic https://www.theupcoming.co.uk/2025/10/29/discover-the-benefits-of-laser-hair-removal-with-therapie-clinic/ Wed, 29 Oct 2025 10:01:01 +0000 https://www.theupcoming.co.uk/?p=525878 For some, unwanted hair can be one of beauty’s biggest frustrations, with endless shaving, waxing and plucking taking up valuable time and money. But laser hair removal can offer a longer-lasting solution, promising smoother skin with minimal upkeep.

Thérapie Clinic, one of the UK and Ireland’s leading aesthetic chains, has built a reputation for its advanced laser technology and accessible prices. But how effective is the treatment, and what can clients really expect? We visited the Belgravia branch to find out if it lives up to the hype.

Just a short walk from Victoria station, the newly renovated clinic is light, airy and spotless. Staff greet you warmly on arrival, immediately setting a reassuring tone. Thérapie uses the medical-grade Cynosure Elite+ laser to treat specific areas or even the full body, typically recommending a course of six to ten sessions for best results.

Around 48 hours before our appointment, we received an email containing pre-treatment forms and preparation advice, including shaving the area 24 hours beforehand and avoiding sunbeds or fake tan.

On the day, we had a consultation with a therapist who clearly explained the process before, during and after treatment. She answered all our questions confidently and put us completely at ease. In fact, every staff member we encountered was knowledgeable, approachable and professional.

During the treatment, a laser is used to target unwanted hair. The light is absorbed by the pigment in each strand beneath the skin and converted to heat, damaging the follicles and reducing future growth. Cold air is emitted throughout to soothe the skin and ease any discomfort.

For the most part, the treatment was painless, though we did feel a hot, pinching sensation in more sensitive areas. Sessions are quick, and we experienced no irritation afterwards.

One of the biggest advantages to using laser is the speed at which it can be carried out. While this varies depending on the area being treated, appointments can take as little as five minutes for the upper lip and 20 minutes for the full legs, making it an ideal option for those short on time.

A break of around four to six weeks is required between each session to allow hair to move from its dormant phase into active growth.

One thing to keep in mind: clinics can often be booked up well in advance. Across our six sessions, a few appointments were delayed due to therapist availability, which may have affected our overall results. If possible, book the full course upfront to stay consistent.

Nevertheless, hair growth was noticeably reduced, regrowth was finer and sparser, and ingrown hairs were completely eradicated. It’s worth noting that this laser is most effective on medium to dark hair and is not suitable for blonde, light brown, or red hair.

The number of sessions needed varies depending on the treatment area, hair type and other factors, such as medications, hormones (including PCOS) and stress. Most clients require six to ten treatments to achieve optimal results, with maintenance sessions (around three per year) recommended thereafter.

While laser hair removal can significantly delay or reduce hair growth, it’s not always a completely permanent solution – unless the follicle is destroyed. Still, it offers long-term smoothness that far outlasts waxing or shaving.
