“These women are battling huge themes in their lives but its their friendship that keeps them going”: A chat with the cast of The Buccaneers
The Buccaneers is a colourful period drama created by Katherine Jakeways and adapted from the unfinished novel by writer Edith Wharton. This eight-part series explores the story of a group of young American women who are let loose on the British high society circuit of the 1870s and explores the merging of the two cultures amidst the romance, friendship and scandals that follow.
Set against the backdrop of some beautiful stately homes and lavish formal balls, the corseted ladies have their hearts set on snaring a rich aristocrat to walk up the aisle with. Directed by Susanna White, the episodes are underpinned by a modern musical soundtrack that includes the likes of Taylor Swift and Emily Kokal and accompanies a script that also brings elements of the modern world into play.
The Upcoming had the pleasure of speaking to the cast of this new series, with Josie Totah and Mia Threapleton speaking to us about both their roles in the series, their hidden relationship and feelings that rise to the surface.
Matthew Broome and Guy Remmers spoke about the relationships they build with the character Annabelle (Nan) and how brilliant it was to work with her as an actress. They also spoke about the beautiful set design and location.
Imogen Waterhouse and Aubri Ibrag chatted about the agency of women in the show and the toxic relationship their characters share. They also shared what drew them to the script.
