“The world needs more love”: Yoshiki on Yoshiki – Under the Sky

Directed by the multifaceted Japanese icon Yoshiki, Under the Sky marks the musician’s directorial debut and is a testament to his artistic versatility. Renowned for his musical genius, fashion influence and philanthropic endeavours, the artist has put together a music documentary that transcends cultural barriers. Featuring an impressive lineup of global acts, including St Vincent, Nicole Scherzinger and The Chainsmoker, the film brings breathtaking performances and interviews, delving into fan connections and the musician’s own experiences of bereavement and how it has dovetailed with his artistic evolution.

The Upcoming had the chance to speak with Yoshiki about his filmmaking debut and how it was born from pandemic isolation to celebrate fan connections and break genre barriers. He shared the process of arranging music with his diverse group of artists, the shooting challenges he faced and the importance of reflecting on personal losses, aiming to inspire love and possibility through his film.
