& Sons: On the red carpet with Johnny Flynn, George Mackay, Anna Geislerová and Pablo Trapero at London Film Festival 2025

Directed by Latino filmmaker Pablo Trapero and written by Sarah Polley, & Sons is a drama film adaptation of David Gilbert’s novel of the same name, which was first published in 2013. The feature, filmed in England, tells the story of a flawed family that comes back together, the lives that each of them has carved out in their time apart and the consequences of those choices.

An all-star ensemble cast includes Bill Nighy, who plays Andrew Dyer, a once-famed novelist turned reclusive alcoholic who spends his days sprawled out on the sofa listening to jazz. After learning about the death of an old friend, he starts to question his own mortality and invites his two grown-up sons to his country pile in an attempt to tell them a secret about their half-brother Andy (Noah Jupe). The duo, who detest their father after they learnt he had an affair and then walked away from his marriage to their mother, Isabel (Imelda Staunton), meet him for their own means, but when secrets arise, it appears all is not as it seems, and the movie unexpectedly traverses an unexpected path.

The Upcoming had the pleasure of speaking to Johnny Flynn about preparing for his role as one of the eldest brothers, Richard and what it was like working with such a brilliant ensemble cast.

Director Trapero spoke to us about what attracted him to the story and how he went about the casting and filming process.

We chatted to George Mackay about coming on board to play the other elder son, Jamie, working with Nighy in the role as his father and what he liked about the script.

Anna Geislerova spoke about her role in the film, what a brilliant time on set everyone had and the standout moments for her.
